Claudia Josi (Associate Member)  | Guernica 37

Claudia Josi is a Swiss-Peruvian lawyer specialized in international human rights law, humanitarian law and transitional justice issues. She has extensive experience working with civil society, international organizations and governmental institutions in Latin America, Europe and North Africa.

She teaches international humanitarian law and transitional justice at Santa Clara Law and is Director of the Geneva Summer Abroad Programme on International Law and Co-Director of the Costa Rica Summer Abroad Programme on International Human Rights Law

 

Before joining Guernica37, she worked as an attorney at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in San José, Costa Rica and as independent consultant with international, non-governmental and governmental organizations, such as the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA/EDA), the Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding (CCDP), and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).

 

In Peru, she has worked on behalf of victims of the Fujimori dictatorship who seek reparations and justice for the crimes committed by the state during the armed conflict and assisted in the creation of good governance protocols aimed at developing more responsive and participatory public administrations. In Venezuela and Bolivia, she engaged with representatives of the state institutions as well as opposition leaders regarding the creation of direct democracy mechanisms and the implementation of the newly adopted Constitution. She also worked as consultant to local human rights groups and victims’ organizations in Tunisia and Algeria in the context of the “Arab Spring” advising them on international legal venues and other transitional justice strategies.

 

She has lectured on human rights, humanitarian law and transitional justice at Stanford University, the Inter American University in Puerto Rico, the World Peace Academy and Fribourg University in Switzerland, the UC David, among others. Since 2008 serves as the director of the working group on transitional justice of the Latin-American Society for International Law (LASIL).
